Trophic interactions and metal transfer in marine ecosystems driven by the Peruvian scallop Argopecten purpuratus aquaculture

چکیده

Abstract This study investigates the trophic interactions and As Cd transfer along seven marine ecosystems in Peru. Five of these are driven by aquaculture Peruvian scallop Argopecten purpuratus . A southward increased gradient δ 15 N was observed among three examined regions coast. The stable isotope analysis R (SIAR)‐stable mixing models helped to clarify feeding ecology A. its important predators (e.g., Bursa ventricosa , Romaleon setosum ). food items can be ranked decreasing order importance: seston > sediment particulate organic matter (POM) brackish‐and‐fresh water POM input, while itself found main prey item for predators. highest magnification factors (TMFs) were 1.46 1.07 Cd, respectively, both at location front Illescas Reserve Zone (northern Peru). Metal biomagnification non‐biomagnification effects webs, but always fitted metal or bio‐dilution regression model as intermediate consumer and/or prey. TMFs linear relationships implied that contamination is a serious concern

Damped trophic cascades driven by fishing in model marine ecosystems.

The largest perturbation on upper trophic levels of many marine ecosystems stems from fishing. The reaction of the ecosystem goes beyond the trophic levels directly targeted by the fishery. This reaction has been described either as a change in slope of the overall size spectrum or as a trophic cascade triggered by the removal of top predators. Here we use a novel size- and trait-based model to...

Complex Trophic Interactions in Kelp Forest Ecosystems

The distributions and abundances of species and populations change almost continuously. Understanding the processes responsible is perhaps ecology s̓ most fundamental challenge. Kelp-forest ecosystems in southwest Alaska have undergone several phase shifts between algaand herbivore-dominated states in recent decades. Overhunting and recovery of sea otters caused the earlier shifts. Studies focus...

Trophic transfer and biomagnification potential of contaminants in aquatic ecosystems.

This review summarizes information obtained from published literature to determine to what degree biomagnification of organic compounds and metals occurs in freshwater and marine food webs. This review was conducted by: (1) examining data from studies conducted in laboratory experiments to establish body burden ratios between trophic levels (trophic transfer coefficients; TTCs); (2) comparing l...

Trophic cascades promote threshold-like shifts in pelagic marine ecosystems.

Fisheries can have a large impact on marine ecosystems, because the effects of removing large predatory fish may cascade down the food web. The implications of these cascading processes on system functioning and resilience remain a source of intense scientific debate. By using field data covering a 30-year period, we show for the Baltic Sea that the underlying mechanisms of trophic cascades pro...
